dear julie, help! it’s thanksgiving! November 27, 2008
dear julie,
help! today is thanksgiving and i’m going to my new boyfriend’s house and meeting his parents for the first time (gulp!) i’m nervous that they might not “get” me, you know? especially since he’s just getting into this hip-style thing, and i think all of his previous gf’s have been kinda “normal.” i want to be myself, but i don’t want to turn them off. should i hide my tattoo? should i take out my eyebrow ring? what do you think would be the perfect outfit to really impress them?
thanks!

my dear “nervous,”
don’t worry — you can dress like a super-chic hipsteress and still not freak out your future in-laws (i mean, your new boyfriend’s parents…) i suggest a very standard base - black pants or skirt and a black top maybe - and then top it off with a vintage jacket and brooch. if the brooch was handed down, all the better. it’ll give you something to talk about and show how family-oriented you are. and don’t worry about the tattoo or the piercing. you are who you are. accommodating a little is one thing, but make sure the person they meet is the real you. above are a few pics from the web (a vintage chanel brooch from www.katsluxury.com, a gorgeous fall-esque vintage jacket found on www.anothertimevintageapparel.com, and a vintage armani jacket found on www.ebay.com.) the bottom two pics are from my own closet. (the blue jacket was actually a hand-me-down from my mother-in-law and the brooch was my nana’s.) you get the idea. good luck! i’m sure they’ll love you! (and if not, maybe you should reconsider a guy from such a narrow-minded family. just saying.)happy thanksgiving!
