hip challenge - can you predict the stars’ Oscar designers? January 31, 2009

Filed under: general, girls clothing, hip clothing, hip culture, hip style, movies — admin @ 11:55 am
the best part of the oscars? well, some might say it’s the dresses.

some people i know like to have a little competition to see who can guess the most oscar winners correctly. now, honestly, how challenging is that? for a long time, the safest bet has been to go with the winners of the golden globes (although this year, who knows? the globes went a little outside the box, didn’t they? which i felt was awesome!)

you want a challenge? i’ll give you a challenge

click the link below to play haute pursuit. the challenge goes way beyond guessing who’s going to win each category - i mean you have a 20% chance of being right with just a wild guess. no, this is a real test. you have to predict which designer each star will wear on oscar night. now, that’s a challenge. definitely not for the faint of heart.

so good luck. when you’ve made your predictions, you can print them out or you can email them to your friends and challenge them.

bring it on!

julie

hip music - johnny cash… covering and covered January 30, 2009

Johnny Cash, the man in black…

the other day i heard this cover by Social Distortion of Cash’s classic ring of fire. i thought it was interesting to hear such a notoriously hard-edged band do a cover of a country song. then i remembered that Johnny Cash had made his own cover of a song by another notoriously hard-edged act - Nine Inch Nails. so here is Social Distortion covering Cash’s ring of fire, and Cash covering Trent Reznor’s hurt.

(be ready, if you’ve never heard Cash’s version of hurt. it will give you chills…)

social distortion covering johnny cash’s ring of fire

johnny cash covering NIN’s hurt

wow.

have a great weekend,

Filed under: general, hip culture, hip entertainment, music — admin @ 11:05 am

hey all - happy friday!

enjoy. i hope to post more music before this TGIF comes to a close, so check back for a terrrrrific cover of ring of fire (as long as i can find the video…)

see ya’,

hip challenge - how old do you think these people are? January 29, 2009

Filed under: general, hip culture, hip entertainment, hip fun — admin @ 3:56 pm
have you ever let that guy at the carnival try to guess your age?

you know the guy i mean — he stands in front of a wall of prizes and you win a stuffed frog or elephant or maybe an inflatable ducky if he is more than two years off in his attempt to guess your age. well, i took the challenge once (it seemed like a much better idea than his other game - Let me guess your weight) and the guy guessed my age right on the nose! not that i thought i looked a lot younger, but i thought there was at least a chance he would go low. so i walked away empty-handed, with the small solace that at least he hadn’t guessed that i was older than i actually was.

well i would like to share with you what must be that carnival guy’s online training site. it’s this uber-cool website designed by Bryant Smith, where you can challenge yourself to guess the age of a series of people whose faces appear in succession. (each of the pics above is from the site.) turns out, it’s not so easy to guess a person’s age! (kudos to all the carnies out there doing this for a living - much harder than it would seem.) it’s fun, and in some ways, slightly stressful. when i played it for the very first time, i guessed the first person exactly right. (a response page comes up and tells you how far off you were, or if you were (ahem) “perfect.”) well, after being told i was perfect at age-guessing, i was very tempted to quit while i was ahead. of course, there’s no punishment for bad guesses, so i forged on. i found that i was the furthest off from the correct age if the person was older than i am. i guess that figures, right? people who were 20 or more years older than i am brought out my biggest errors. i always guessed too low. very encouraging, actually. good to know it’s possible to look ten or more years younger than you are!

this is a really fun challenge but watch out – it can become a time sink (sort of like desktop solitaire can be for some people - but much cooler!) my one complaint– people upload their own pics, so some of them are ridiculously unclear. play and you’ll see what i mean. for those people, i have learned they are diliberately trying to cheat the game - i now guess them all way older than they look. also, if you’re not too scared to know what people think, you can upload a personal photo and check back to see the average of people’s guesses for your age. (this, i must say, is too scary for me. i’ll stick with the pros at the carnivals…)

enjoy!
