hip music - “crystal” connects The Killers to New Order June 3, 2009

the “cover band” that inspired The Killers…

well, if you read this blog you know i have a thing about a well done cover song. yesterday i posted about “shadowplay,” the Joy Division song that is artfully covered by The Killers. Another great song covered by The Killers is “romeo and juliet” by Dire Straits. maybe i’ll post about that song in the future. but did you know that The Killers took their band name from a New Order cover band?

okay, maybe i’m twisting the truth a bit, so here’s the whole story. when New Order put out a video for the song “crystal,” they chose to show the song being played “live” by another band - the entire video is basically an ornate “lip-sync” dramatized by a fake band. and who is this band? well, if you look closely at the bass drum, you’ll see their name - The Killers (pause the video at 1:21 to get a nice look at it.) so there you have it - a fake band inspires a very real band. And if the “crystal” video looks familiar to you, maybe it’s because The Killers video for “somebody told me” is a nice homage to their inspiration.

below, both videos. enjoy!

hip music - the killers channeling joy division June 2, 2009

shadowplay

since this song involves three things i truly appreciate - the killers, joy division, and a great cover version of a great song - it was destined to be the subject of a post on hipsterama eventually.

unfortunately, the official killers video for this song cannot be embedded, but you can watch it here. it’s worth it to see the story of joy division’s ian curtis unfold in mournful black and white, set to the tune some say foretold his eventual suicide.

below, two live videos. first, the real joy division performing the song for the first time on television. the second, the killers (so obviously the musical offspring of bands like joy division) performing the song in concert.

and for those of you interested in a little tidbit about the connection between the killers and new order (the immensely successful band formed by the members of joy division after the loss of ian curtis), check back tomorrow for two more videos.

ciao!

Hip Music - Oasis covering Cum on Feel The Noize May 29, 2009

Filed under: general, hip celebrities, hip culture, hip entertainment, music — admin @ 8:13 am
happy birthday to noel gallagher of oasis.

he’s 42 today, which is completely mind-bending to me. here’s an awesome video of the band playing live, covering “cum on feel the noize” - originally a glam rock song released by Slade in 1973 and revived in 1983 by heavy metal band Quiet Riot, who also covered Slade’s “Mama Weer All Crazee Now”.

so enjoy. even if you aren’t a fan of the song or the band, this vid is worth watching for noel’s custom painted union jack guitar. it’s an Epiphone Sheraton. (did you just hear a thud? that was my husband falling out of his chair when he realized i’d thought to include details about the guitar. live with a guitarist long enough, you begin to know what’s important to them…)

happy weekend!

hip music = mystery jets May 13, 2009

Filed under: general, hip culture, hip entertainment, music — admin @ 4:13 pm
what exactly are mystery jets?

mystery jets are a british band with a sound that reminds me of the 80s. their style is described as “thamesbeat” and “post-punk revival” on wikipedia. (i’m not sure what either of these two terms mean, but they both sound AWESOME!)

so here’s a sampling. enjoy!
