underground music posters=total hipness April 2, 2009

Filed under: general, hip culture, hip decor, hip entertainment, hip gifts, hip style, music, shop — admin @ 11:06 am

(click on images to see them fully (the rapture poster had to be slightly cropped, but all the others will fully expand when double clicked.))

you know how you turned your friends onto your favorite little-known band, and now they act like they discovered it all by themselves and think they are suddenly the “gods of cool-dom” because they have YOUR discovery on THEIR ipods? well, never fear - you are about to out-cool them to the extreme!

(okay, maybe that’s a bit harsh… it’s good to share info about great music, even with your ungrateful friends, right? so think of the advice that follows as another means of spreading the word about underground music, even though it does carry the side-benefit of displaying your consummate coolness.)

introducing the most incredible source of the best gig posters being made in the growing underground poster scene - Poster Cabaret. you are going to be blown away from the moment you enter this unique website. it will open up a whole secret world of dazzling music-related art to you (and, through you, your less-cool friends. *sigh*) and if you prefer art for its own sake, Poster Cabaret also offers limited edition and hand made art prints, often times made by the same artists making gig posters.

nothing can substitute for clicking right here and wandering around the gallery or searching by band name for limited edition gig posters. but to give you a taste of what awaits you, i have tortuously selected the above array of nine.  these are not meant to represent the best - that would be immmmpoooooossssible!  they are simply meant to serve as a sampling of the incredible variety.

oh, and the prices are totally affordable.  in other words - these posters are perfect

and with that, i’ll leave you to the personal torment of selecting which you will purchase.

bonne chance,
julie

an easy to make gift to give to just about anyone December 18, 2008

Filed under: general, hip culture, hip gifts, hip style — admin @ 2:38 pm
desperate for a sweet gift and completely out of money and ideas?

here is an uber-easy, yet wonderfully lovely gift you can make. it’s quick, easy, (anyone can do this - even kids,) and can be personalized to the individual - male or female. i present to you - the bath bag.

all you need is a washcloth in any color and a piece of ribbon. you can choose any color or type of ribbon you think fits the individual. for my family, the women will receive either a blue bag with a white ribbon or a white bag with a black ribbon. the men will be receiving tan bags with a manly black cord for the ribbon. i bought the ribbon at AC Moore for a few dollars, and the washcloths came from Target, where they started as low as under $3.00 for a set of 12. (i believe the washcloths i bought were about $1.50 for a set of 4.)

What you’ll need:

Washcloth or square piece of material the size of a washcloth
18-24″ of ribbon or lace
Hot glue OR sewing machine

How to make it:

1.) Lay the washcloth onto your work surface and fold in half.
2.) Fold your length of ribbon in half.
3.) Place the folded end of the ribbon inside the folded washcloth. You will place the folded end of the ribbon about 1/3 of the way down from the top of the washcloth, leave the folded end of the ribbon sticking out a little (see diagram where it says “ribbon end”). The rest of the ribbon should be on a slant, coming out the upper left side of the top of the washcloth, not straight up and down. This will allow for the ribbon to tie around the top of your bag when you are finished.
4.) If you are using a sewing machine, pin up the sides of the washcloth and be sure to capture the ribbon before sewing along the bottom and long side, leaving the top open.
5.) If you’re using hot glue, simply hot glue the bottom and open side and be sure to glue the ribbon end inside as well.
6.) Carefully turn the bag inside out.
7.) Fill with bath beads, bath salt, or soap.
8.) Tie the bag closed with your ribbon.

easy, right? and personal. you can go with the person’s favorite color, favorite soap, or match their bathroom. you could use a pink washcloth with rose-patterned ribbon for your grandma, and then use a black washcloth with a black-and-white-checked ribbon for the ska-lover in your life. and if you need an additional gift, make a second bag out of a hand towel. this can be their “bath supplies” bag. they’re great for college students who live in a dorm and have to carry their shampoo, soap, etc, back and forth to the hall bathroom.

enjoy! happy holidays!
julie
